Tips for Putting Your Idea Into Action on Film

MAKING MOVIES, like anything, follows a ’system.’ It starts with the concept of an idea, and ends up becoming a uniquely packaged product. Academy award winner Martin Scorsese started exactly where you did. He had a limited budget, just one actor, and a couple of props, but he created his first short six minute short, called the Big Shave. And look where he is now. He is directing two and a half hour epics such as Shutter Island.

Here are the steps and some top tips for putting your idea into action in the film making process.

1) GET YOUR IDEA AS A STORYBOARD

Putting an idea into pictures using a storyboard is a great way to start. By doing this, you can get an idea of how a scene will develop, and what will be in the ‘frame’ of that scene.

2) WATCH AND OBSERVE CHARACTERS AND PEOPLE IN REAL LIFE

If you are struggling for ideas or characters in your film, then a good way to get ideas is to observe people and places in real life, and to imagine how these would add to your film. For example, perhaps you have a favourite visiting place that could be an ideal location for your film? Perhaps you come across someone you are observing in the street that would be ideal for a roaming character? Once you put your observation glasses on, you will spark off lots of ideas for plots, character, and locations…

3) THINK ABOUT MUSIC WHEN PLANNING SCENES

I don’t know about you, but music is a great way to add mood, and character to your film. Choosing a great piece of music can make an average film become an outstanding one. It’s important to choose pieces that flow with the action. For example, the classic cliffhanging music in Jaws, the melodramatic emotional music in the Godfather, or the battle-style music in Apocalypse Now. They all highlight tension and mood.

Secrets of Action Screenwriting

Becoming familiar with the secrets of action screenwriting is essential for a screenwriter career. Today action movies dominate the screen – be it either the cinematic world, video games, or popular TV shows. Scripts that are action-driven rule the roost of the entertainment industry. Action movies are more thrilling, have a special appeal for the young at heart, and sell more than others.

It is often less challenging to write-action based scripts because the writer need not delve too deeply into the psyche of the human mind. An action, page-turning script will be welcomed by Hollywood and the movie industry in general. The secrets of action screenwriting are widely used in Hollywood to make movies with international audiences. Following the following tips will help you write an action script:

• Have a single protagonist who is imbued with extraordinary powers. Manifest his emotions through his motions. The stronger the emotions, the bigger the actions.

• Write using present tense. This adds vigor to the storyline. The characters are propelled forward with “I do”, not “I did”.

• The director’s call for “Lights! Camera! Action!” should actually result in action and not just activity.

• Be clear about the personality of the hero and write what best suits him or her.

• Start with a one-sentence premise and develop the entire plot around it. Write using your head and your heart.

• The secrets of action screenwriting focus on fast-paced action. Both the hero and antagonist are vested with strong traits, but they also have flaws.

• Secrets of actions screenwriting dictate that the author tunes in on logical thinking and progressing from point A to point B in a stipulated sequence. Rely on a plot to move the story ahead with an accurate
approach, strong structure, and rational analysis. This is also called writing in linear movement.

• You may want to utilize use a beast or a horrid creature, which has to be subdued by the hero. This only adds to the charisma of the movie and the hero.

• Remember that a single picture is worth thousands of words. Avoid redundant verbosity.

Using these simple but effective secrets of action screenwriting, a screenwriter can increase his or her effectiveness. Keep reading other screenwriters’ scripts and reading tips and books about screenwriting. Above all, get feedback and keep rewriting to create a polished screenplay. Tips For Picking Good Movies

If you are given the opportunity to select a movie, be sure to glance through all the good movies before making a right decision. Perhaps the initial step is to dictate the genre of film that suits both you and your companion. And for this, you can probably go along with your mood. If you feeling indifferent, where you have not even the slightest idea of what you are feeling, you can opt for movies like detective, fantasy, animations, comedy or chick flick to enhance your current mood. But if you are happy, you can watch anything in the range of action, adventure, musical or comedy.

It is rather difficult to select a good movie choice if you are feeling all depressed and distracted. More often than not, you do not even have the atmosphere of watching a movie. But you can cheer yourself up by watching a positive movie such as a comedy to offer yourself some good laughs. Humor should be able to neutralize the blue inside you. If thoughtful is the word of your mood, then you may challenge some science fiction, horror, history, thriller, or action movies. But beware also of some etiquette, meaning taking into the account the interest and mood of your companion.

If you are a parent, intending to select some good movies for your children, you have to stick with several important rules. Of course all parents would want to appear cool and allow some freedom to their kids but if they are entering the theater in a group, make sure to select one that complements their age. This is an imperative rule to abide especially if you are bringing along other kids as well. Gangsters, horrors, extreme romanticism and other inappropriate genres should be avoided as they may penetrate negative elements to the children’s mind.

But if are one of picky attitude when it comes to movie choice, you can first browse through the reviews regarding the movie via the internet before you weigh if you should watch a specific film. Besides, you can also first watch the trailers to see if you are truly interested as some movies may not appear to be as what you think it is. Some movies are overrated with the amount of advertisements so in order to spend your movie expenditure wisely, be sure that you choose one that is worthy of your penny.

Home Theater Basic Tips

Lately my spouse has initiated a campaign to convince me to build a whole home theater facility at the basement. I do understand that her passion for such a facility is due to her great love for the art of movies. But, personally I’d prefer watching a movie at the cinema. Especially this is true for an action movie with a lot of effects. I do find that the experience of the special effects, the detailed close-ups, and landscapes dramatically enhanced on a big screen at the cinema, compared to a smaller screen at home. Something there is lost.

Home theater thus must provide the visual and audio experience as similar as possible to the large screen and the enhanced audio multi-channel at the cinema. This requires a big screen with an adequate projector, or at least, a big TV set with high sensitivity and high refreshing frequency. Furthermore, a good home theater facility requires appropriate audio system, a video player, a DVD player, and of course, an impressive seating set, for you and for your hosts.

The decision and the selection of the proper components is not an easy one. For example, the audio system must be designed carefully to meet your personal experience. Speakers of assumed similar sound quality may sound differently to different people, and different geometry of the room. In addition, the audio system includes several components that you should be familiar with. You need to define whether a single channel or a full multi-channel speaker set is needed, i.e. a 2.1, 5.1 or a 7.1 system, for a full surround sound experience. Rear speakers need to be placed correctly as well as the front speakers and the subwoofer.

Once you have handled the audio component, you need to define and select the video component. Either you would go for a big TV set, High Definition (HDTV) or you go for a wide screen and an enhanced projector. You need to carefully understand the advantages and the disadvantages of LCD technology compared to Plasma and LED TV sets. Differences may appear in terms of brightness, angle of visibility, refreshing frequency, and more.

Then you need to pay attention to the DVD player. If you have an HDTV set you better go for a blu-ray DVD player to fully exploit the resolution of your TV or projector. Video streaming is another technology of providing video to the home and various xtreamers, which support processing of such data, appeared to the market.

Not only that the components are many, almost any electrical firm provides home theater related components. Some of them are: Panasonic, Sharp, Coby, Bose, LG, Philips, Sony and many more. Some of them distribute their products under various branding, in order to differentiate and position the product differently. Some are expert in audio systems, while others are expert in TV set for example.

Some of the companies distribute their systems under various brands, in order position the product differently and set the price accordingly. This way some products are sold at a low-price which are suitable for market stores.

After discussing all this information, no wonder that my spouse had to initiate a massive campaign at home in order to convince me, and change my state of mind. As I already have admitted, I do recognize that movie fans would like to have their own home theater, but I’d personally prefer the good old outdoor cinema, where I can truly immerse with the movie story and scenes, for ninety minutes of joy, without dealing with the endless components, their quality, their vendors, and their prices.
