Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Good new. The Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen game is a faithful adaptation of the Michael Bay film – it’s an overlong mess of inane explosions, untouched by talent and fuelled by misplaced nostalgia for a cartoon so old that nobody can remember how bad it was. But giant robots. And Megan Fox. And explosions. But seriously, this game sucks. There’s a glimmer of hope, though, evidenced in one of the smart decisions made by developer Luxoflux. Vehicle transformations (reminder: you’re controlling robots in disguise) are fluid, easy and instantaneous, activated by pulling and holding down the right trigger. Releasing it reverts you back to your towering, robotic form and thus enables some of the game’s exciting transition moves. Barreling down the road as a sports car, transforming and leaping over a building, and then landing on the other side with four wheels in one smooth motion never ceases to get old. Unfortunately, the game’s mission structure becomes geriatric faster than the guy who drank from the wrong cup at the end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. There’s very little difference between the Autobot and Decepticon campaigns outside of the bot banter, nor is there much to distinguish between the 40-plus missions, most of which are variations and repetitions of ’shoot all the enemy robots.’ Oh, and sometimes you’ll have to chauffeur Shia LaBeouf around. The mission objectives, unrelenting waves of identical enemies and laborious boss fights transform the whole game into hours of mind-melting tedium. There’s absolutely nothing to sink your mind teeth into. The multiplayer mode actually provides the most fun – deathmatch, capture the thing, and territory control gametypes are accounted for – but the unique special abilities and weapons granted to each bot make it a wholly unbalanced affair. This mode also falls victim to the game’s muddy graphics, which make it quite hard to spot enemies in the drab cities and even harder to feel any sense of scale. The explosions sure are nice though. Ask, and ye shall receive: When Michael Bay’s Transformers came out in the summer of 2007, a soundtrack was issued that gathered a collection of pop and rock songs. But fans clamored for the score so arduously that it was released a few months later. Was it worth it? Steve Jablonsky comes from Hans Zimmer’s stable of composers, and anybody with half an ear could have guessed it. Jablonsky’s other …
