Do you need an ORIGINAL 1099 Form to complete a tax return?

Or is a copy ok? I was emailed a 1099 from my employer’s accountant, can I send in the printed 1099 from the email attachment or do I need the original?
I’m an IC, at least for this position, so that’s why I’m getting a 1099.

You don’t need ANY 1099 to prepare and file a tax return. The law requires you to keep accurate business records and you use those to prepare your tax returns. Use the 1099 to keep the payers honest — I see LOTS of errors on those!

BTW, employers issue W-2s, NOT 1099s! If you are an employee and received a 1099, demand a proper W-2. If your employer refuses, file Form SS-8 with the IRS to get a formal ruling on your status and force the employer’s hand.
