Honest Review Of Spider Man 2

Much like the Tony Hawk series, it looks like Activision’s Spider-Man games have to appear on any remotely attractive gaming device, be it a console, handheld, or even a cell phone. Spider-Man 2 is no exception, of course. After being released across all consoles in May last year, a GBA version and even a Nintendo DS title debuted in November last year, it’s time for Spidey to make his debut on the PSP. Because the PSP has potentially enough power to do so, many have expected the PSP’s Spider-Man 2 being a straight port of the console versions. This is not the case since vicarious Visions has created an entirely new line designed exclusively for the PSP. But how good is it?

Unlike the console versions of Spider-Man 2 for PSP is completely linear. There is no free-roaming segments in the game so they hope a small New York City skyscraper hopping must continue waiting. Instead PSP Spidey is much like the original Spider-Man released back in 2002, and the comic-like spiderman titles like Neversoft did on the original PlayStation. The story is very loosely based on the movie, and it includes a number of other missions, you are fighting against some of Spider-Man comic book foes who were not actually in the movie (Mysterio, Shocker, Rhino and Vulture). There are 19 stages to play through, and though that may sound like a good amount, consider this: each stage takes between 5-7 minutes to complete, and some stages take about 2 minutes. You can complete Spider-Man 2 in one, roughly, two-hour meeting.

The game itself is relatively shallow, then your mission has always openly straightforward and, above all else, they are very repetitive. For each mission you complete, you will be given points for your development, and with these points you will be able to upgrade Spidey by improving his strength, jumping, Web capabilities, health capacity, web boom. Additionally, you can buy a few new moves to use against your enemies. None of the upgrades are really necessary, since the game never really have enough of a challenge for you to use them.

Controlling Spidey is relatively simple and almost identical to the console titles, but some may need a little time to adjust to the exclusive use of the PSP’s analog core (D-pad camera pans around). Again, Spidey-2’s gameplay is very straightforward and average in every way. Some might find the game to be pretty fun, though definitely shallow, while others will dismiss the game entirely, hoping for more.

Visually, Spider-Man 2 is not quite the virtual tour-de-force I thought it would be. For one, it indicates detail bad; every non-playable character in the game looks like a Grand Theft Auto III civilians – yes, that bad. And while Spider-Man himself looks fairly decent, he still sports some poorly done textures and ugly black web lining on his costume, unlike the silver lining. The environments are nothing special, and most of it screams ‘old’. Textures – as a whole – is impure, creates an aged look. Frame rate has problems, and during tense moments, you will discover some noticeable frame dip. On the positive side, the game has no pop-up question is this PSP rendering everything in one shot with ease.

Spider-Man 2 has some PSP exclusive CG cutscenes with some fantastic production work and visual detail. The cutscenes are entirely computer generated, and they animate very smoothly – like a big screen production. These are definitely a sight to behold and was one of the biggest attractions that kept me playing the game until the end. In-game animation is also very smooth, as Spidey moves around the screen as he does on the console versions. Overall, the visuals are average, and like THUG2 Remix, shows signs of being a rush job.

Sound in the Spidey-2, unlike Activision’s other launch title, is superb. While most of the in-game sound effects are recycled, the voice acting and soundtrack that gets thumbs up here. The voice acting is quite original, and features cast Toby Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Alfred Molina and even Mr. Video Game Voiceover, James Arnold Taylor. The acting in the course of the CG sequences are very well done and cutscenes are done so well that I found myself looking for a fully CG rendered Spider-Man 2, which looked as good as the cutscenes in the game. The soundtrack of the game is fully orchestrated and flows well with the game’s epic-like story (I use “epic” very loosely in this case).
